Dies ist leider nicht so einfach von aussen zu erkennen. Nicht immer sind Karos, die von aussen geschlossen aussehen auch von innen zu. Dies ist einfach zu erklären: Decken, die nicht von Hand befüllt werden, müßen auf einem langes Füll-Rohr Stück für Stück zurück gezogen und dabei durch einen Luftstrom befüllt werden. Dabei kann nicht jedes Karo nach dem Füllen separat geschlossen werden. So bleibt in den meisten Decken noch eine Öffnung von 5-10cm am Innensteg, hier verschiebt sich mit der Zeit die Daune. Als Steg bezeichnet man die Innenwände einer Kassette/Karos. Diese Innenwand sollte bei einer Decke die für das ganze Jahr oder für den Winter ist, immer vorhanden sein! Durch diesen Steg, der je Füllmenge verschiedene Höhen hat, wird vermieden dass an den Nähten Kältebrücken entstehen. Diesen Nachteil kann man sich bei Sommerdecken zum Vorteil machen und so eine nicht ganz so wärmende Decke herstellen. Mehr über Innenstege.

Das wohl größte Merkmal einer Daunendecke ist die Füllung. Pauschal kann man davon ausgehen, dass eine gute Daune von einer Gans kommt (auch hier bestätigt sich die Regel durch eine Ausnahme: die beste Daune kommt von der Isländischen Eiderente). Die Qualität der Füllung macht den größten Anteil des Preises einer Daunendecke aus. Je besser die Daune an sich (ob weiß oder silbergrau ist kaum ein Kriterium) und wie hoch der Federanteil ist (zwischen 80 und 0%) – dies kann den Preis einer Decke leicht verdoppeln.

Eine gute Daunendecke sollte auch nicht unangenehm riechen. Ein schlechter Geruch einer Decke deutet eher auf eine minderwertige Qualität oder/und eine schlechte Wäsche der Rohware hin.

Ein kleines aber feines Indiz für die Verarbeitungsqualität ist die Naht an sich. Aus einer Massenproduktion stammend, sehen Sie von außen nur eine Falte, aber nicht den Faden (bei einer Kassettendecke!) Am leichtesten für große Schnell-Näh-Produzierer ist es den Stoff von links zu nähen und danach um zuklappen. Hierbei gehen die nicht korrekt genähten Bahnen unter. Ein Qualitätzeichen ist es also wenn jede Naht von aussen zu sehen ist – und auch hier: es gibt sicher Ausnahmen.

Eine Qualitätsdaunendecke hat nie nur das Standardmaß der Bettwäsche z.b. 135x200cm oder 155x220cm. Die Decke sollte auf jeder Seite mindestens 5-10cm größer sein um nicht in der Bettwäsche hin und her zu rutschen.
